Record: The Hurricanes end the fall season at 6-1-3, finishing in second place. Next week- District Cup!
Notes: Great team defense today. It was awesome to hear Lauren talking to/directing the players in front of her especially with regards to our wing players "marking up" on their wings. Blair did a great job on #10 shutting down their go-to player. And Liza and Kate did a great job on their opposite player, #2 (#10's target player), taking away their wide option on the back side.
Congratulations to Sophia. I couldn't see the angle on the shot, but Joe Corner assures me she put a "little English" on the ball. So, I only have one question...left foot or right foot?
And, so we all know regarding Kiera's penalty: Back-in-the-day, field players could play the ball directly to the Keeper who could then pick the ball up; there was no restriction as to how long the Keeper could hold the ball; they were simply restricted to four steps from where they gained possession. This practice led to intentional delays and was used as a tactic to run down the clock.
About ten years ago the rule was changed as such: The Keeper could no longer pick up a ball played to them DIRECTLY AND INTENTIONALLY unless it was played to them by a header; concurrently the restriction on the number of steps the Keeper could take was dropped and they were given a six second limit (hence the dash to top of the box to make the kick).
Apparently I disagreed with the official's interpretation of INTENTIONALLY.
The opponent is awarded an "indirect free kick" meaning the ball must be touched by any two players before it goes in the goal. Our nearest player must be at least 10 yards away from the ball or on the goal line whichever is closest. They followed the standard procedure in this situation which is to have one player move the ball and to have a second player shoot with the second touching.
Again, I disagreed with the official's interpretation of whether the ball had moved or not on their first attempt (because I was pleased with the outcome!), but it was the correct call as the ball must move "one full rotation" before being touched again. Incredibly she missed twice.
To avoid the situation, Kiera could have dribbled and passed. That's what we talked about at half time.
Another strategy is to have somebody like Kelly just kick the ball really hard at the wall and when they all cower and turn, the ball bounces off one of their players (second touching) into the goal or one of your players gets a deflection (third touching). Not a bad strategy from 4 yards. The two-touch strategy is better from distance when the wall is further from the goal, because it helps get the ball around the wall instead of over or through it.
Congratulations on a very fun season. It is amazing how much growth
the girls have shown since last winter. Those summer practices paid
off. CCS football will be seeded tomorrow afternoon and I will know at what time Palma plays on Friday (hopefully at home and hopefully at 7:00 pm). Once I have that information, I will send out an email regarding what times we will practice this week for District Cup.
Plan on Wednesday and Friday. Thanks!
