Notes: Not a bad weekend for a team without a goal keeper. I "love"
Celeste's pictures of the Keepers; they look like the loneliest, most unhappy people on Earth. You should see them on the sideline at the end of 1st half and the end of the game; they stomp of the field, mutiny in their eyes, throw the gloves and shirt on the ground and give me the "look" that says in no uncertain terms, "they're done"!
All of that being a testament to the team work of our 1st line players.
There are no "stats" for the defense; just the satisfaction of a job well done (a "clean sheet"). And while there are some impressive statistics listed above, I think the most impressive number right now is that our defense had not allowed a goal, until today, since October 14th when we tied the Pac Hot Shots at York, 2-2. So, thank you to Lauren, Sophia, Alex, Blair, and Kiera for a job well done. And thank you to Kiera, Kelly, Rebecca, Emilie, Sara, and even Ashlin, for "doing time" in goal this season.
The girls played hard all weekend and had the will to see it through.
Saturday was a long day and the only thing I told them after the second game was that they were only halfway there. This morning, for the first time in over a month they trailed in a match, and they didn't let it phase them. They just played harder (ask them about tornadoes in a hurricane). And this afternoon, when they were spent and even a little afraid, they just kept slugging it out against a big, strong team (look for the picture of Alicia between two defenders). Good stuff.

I'll put together a ramdom rotation for the trophy and email it out.
We'll do one week with each family and then bring it back to my house for safe keeping. If you'd like to have it out for a special occassion after that, let me know.
If you're killing time this week and haven't had enough soccer, my boys play in King City Monday night at 5:30 and Tuesday, 3:30 at York.
Admission is free.
Have a great week and a happy Thanksgiving!

End of the Season Notes from Coach Scott Corner
Dear Parents:
Like most things in life, success of an athletic season often goes to the team(s) with staying power; that will to see things through to the end, whether it be a match or a season. At our level a big part of the staying power depends on our parents' willingness to support their player's participation. We have practiced and played a lot since March and we have improved, in no small part due to your commitment as parents. Thank you.
By all accounts we've had a successful year. The girls played better this fall than last spring; and they played better in the second half of this season than the first. They worked hard and had fun.
Tomorrow we will play in our first tournament and again success will come to those with staying power; the physical and mental discipline to see things through. Thank you for your support and participation; and please wish you daughter good luck tonight when she heads off to bed.

District Cup INFO
This weekend our first game is at 9:00am at Morrill Middle School. The address is
1970 Morrill Avenue, San Jose CA 95132 (mapquest).
Please expect an hour and 15 minute drive from Salinas. It is at least 6 miles up HWY 680N.
Coach Corner would like out team to arrive at 8:00am.
Please arrive in your white jersey, red shorts, white socks.
Please pack your red jersey as well. The same goes for Sunday.
Pack both combinations, with the appropriate socks, please.
Snack will be provided at the games. As parents, you are responsible for the care and feeding of your children between games. (I am sure Coach Corner will have an opinion on this subject!) You are welcome to leave the field during this long break between games, as long as your daughter is back by 2:00pm.
Please bring extra water for your daughter, as it is NOT the snack parents' responsiblity to replenish your daughters water-bottle.
Please pack blankets, beach towels, umbrellas, and sweatshirts. It could be chilly.
I will pack our EZ-up canopy. If anyone else has something they would like to provide for Saturday and Sunday to make the girls more comfortable, that would be great!
Our late game Saturday is at 3:00. Please be at the field at 2:00pm. It is the same field as our morning game. Game time Sunday will be determined by Saturdays outcome.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call me.
Thank you. Good luck Hurricanes!

MCFC Hurricanes v. MH Pac Hot Shots Notes from Coach Scott
MCFC Hurricanes v. MH Pac Hot Shots
11/11/06; 1:45 pm
Location: J.F. Smith Elementary
1 2 - F
Hurricanes 2 0 - 2
Hot Shots 0 0 - 0
Scoring:
1. Hurricanes: Kelly Smith (asst. Ashley Tibbs; 18th min) 2. Hurricanes: Sophia White (25th min)
Keepers:
Hurricanes: Kiera Paulo (0 saves; 0 goals) Hot Shots: (6 saves; 2 goals)
Record: The Hurricanes end the fall season at 6-1-3, finishing in second place. Next week- District Cup!
Notes: Great team defense today. It was awesome to hear Lauren talking to/directing the players in front of her especially with regards to our wing players "marking up" on their wings. Blair did a great job on #10 shutting down their go-to player. And Liza and Kate did a great job on their opposite player, #2 (#10's target player), taking away their wide option on the back side.
Congratulations to Sophia. I couldn't see the angle on the shot, but Joe Corner assures me she put a "little English" on the ball. So, I only have one question...left foot or right foot?
And, so we all know regarding Kiera's penalty: Back-in-the-day, field players could play the ball directly to the Keeper who could then pick the ball up; there was no restriction as to how long the Keeper could hold the ball; they were simply restricted to four steps from where they gained possession. This practice led to intentional delays and was used as a tactic to run down the clock.
About ten years ago the rule was changed as such: The Keeper could no longer pick up a ball played to them DIRECTLY AND INTENTIONALLY unless it was played to them by a header; concurrently the restriction on the number of steps the Keeper could take was dropped and they were given a six second limit (hence the dash to top of the box to make the kick).
Apparently I disagreed with the official's interpretation of INTENTIONALLY.
The opponent is awarded an "indirect free kick" meaning the ball must be touched by any two players before it goes in the goal. Our nearest player must be at least 10 yards away from the ball or on the goal line whichever is closest. They followed the standard procedure in this situation which is to have one player move the ball and to have a second player shoot with the second touching.
Again, I disagreed with the official's interpretation of whether the ball had moved or not on their first attempt (because I was pleased with the outcome!), but it was the correct call as the ball must move "one full rotation" before being touched again. Incredibly she missed twice.
To avoid the situation, Kiera could have dribbled and passed. That's what we talked about at half time.
Another strategy is to have somebody like Kelly just kick the ball really hard at the wall and when they all cower and turn, the ball bounces off one of their players (second touching) into the goal or one of your players gets a deflection (third touching). Not a bad strategy from 4 yards. The two-touch strategy is better from distance when the wall is further from the goal, because it helps get the ball around the wall instead of over or through it.
Congratulations on a very fun season. It is amazing how much growth
the girls have shown since last winter. Those summer practices paid
off. CCS football will be seeded tomorrow afternoon and I will know at what time Palma plays on Friday (hopefully at home and hopefully at 7:00 pm). Once I have that information, I will send out an email regarding what times we will practice this week for District Cup.
Plan on Wednesday and Friday. Thanks!

CYSA and this tournament.
REGISTRATION
Hosting Leagues will be responsible for checking in teams. Each team must provide the
following credentials:
1. Laminated USYSA player passes for the players and coaches
All teams must have the following credentials and must produce them if required by the
hosting league:
1. Team Goldenrod with League and District Registrars signatures - (if requested by
hosting league)
2. Medical release forms with all the required signatures (parent and player)
GUEST PLAYERS
NO Guest Players are allowed in the District II Cup.
DURATION OF GAMES
The duration of the District II Cup games shall be as follows:
Preliminary games
U11 to U13 25 minute halves
U14 to U19 30 minute halves
Consolation/Championship games
U11 to U13 25 minute halves
U14 to U19 30 minute halves
All ties in preliminary games will stand. Semifinal games, if tied, will go straight to FIFA
kicks from the mark. In case of a tie in a championship or consolation game, two 5-
minute overtimes will be played (NO golden goal, per FIFA). If still tied after OT,
championship and consolation games will be decided by kicks from the mark.
Time limit: preliminary games will be concluded five (5) minutes prior to the scheduled
start of the next game, regardless of the amount of time played in each half.
FINES, FORFEITS, PENALTIES, AND REFUNDS
A. Any team that drops from the District II Cup competition after the team has entered
the competition and prior to the schedule being created shall receive a
refund of their entry fee less an administrative charge of $100.00.
Note—schedules may be created a number of days before they are actually
posted on the District II website. Teams must notify the District II Cup director in writing
by e-mail if they wish to withdraw.
B. Once a schedule has been created for the District II Cup competition, a team’s
$350 entry fee becomes “non-refundable.” Any team that withdraws from the
competition or is declared ineligible for any reason shall forfeit its entry fee - even if a
suitable replacement team is found.
C. If a team enters the District II Cup competition and withdraws less than one week
before the competition, or forfeits one or more games, the $350 entry fee is forfeited and
an additional penalty of $100 will be assessed to the team. Any team which fails to have
(7) eligible players with player passes on the field within (5) minutes of the scheduled
start will forfeit the game. No scoring points are awarded if both teams forfeit (see
“Determining Winners” above).
DETERMINING WINNERS
The following scoring system will be used:
Win 6 points
Tie 3 points
Loss 0 points
Goals 1 point per goal to maximum of 3
points per game
Shut Out 1 point
Forfeit 9 points to opposing team. Posted as
2-0 win.
Red Card - Player 1 point deducted for each red
Red Card – Coach 2 points deducted for each red
Scoring examples
• 1 – 1 tie shall be posted as 4 points for each team. 3 points for the tie and 1 point
for the goal
• 0 – 0 tie shall be posted as 4 points for each team. 3 points for a tie and 1 point for
the shutout.
Ties will be broken as follows:
1. Head-to-head results
2. Goal differential (goals scored minus goals allowed - to a maximum differential
of 4 per game)
3. Fewest goals allowed
4. Most goals scored (to a maximum of 4 per game)
5. Red cards – team with fewest red cards advances
6. Kicks taken from the mark, per FIFA.
Should more than two teams be tied, the above list of tiebreakers will be used in
sequential order until one team is determined to be the winner. The tie-breaking
procedure does not revert back to previous tie-breaking criteria after one team has been
eliminated.
Should three or more teams be tied, a “round robin” shoot-out will then be utilized as
follows: Ten (10) shots will be taken per team, five (5) each against each opposing
keeper. Total from two (2) rounds re-shoot. Coach will designate ten (10) shooters of
which ANY ROSTERED PLAYER MAY SHOOT.
Round 1

imposed. All red cards will be forwarded to District II Board.

judgment calls and send-offs may not be protested or appealed.

2. Prior to a goal kick by either team
3. After a goal by either team
4. After an injury (either team may sub)
5. At half time
6. After being shown a yellow card (only the player shown the card may be
substituted - the decision to substitute is up to the coach)
FIELD MARSHAL
The field marshal will collect the game card directly from the referee at the end of each
game and deliver the game card to the scorekeeper. The game card is the official game
report and it is also the document to be used for paying the referees.
SUSPENDED GAMES
If, in the opinion of game officials, a game must be terminated for misconduct of players,
coaches or spectators, the offending team may be suspended from further play and will
forfeit that game and all remaining games. All previous points earned remain as played,
and the home league of the offending team will be contacted. If, in the opinion of the
game officials, they feel that the game may be resumed, the game will be subject to being
ended at five (5) minutes prior to the start of the next game.
RIGHT TO CHANGE
The District II Board of Directors reserves the right to change any rule. If a change
occurs, an update will be posted on the District II website no later than five (5) days
before the weekend of the competition.

PARENTS, AND SPECTATORS THROUGHOUT THIS TOURNAMENT.

CYSA and this tournament.
REGISTRATION

following credentials:
1. Laminated USYSA player passes for the players and coaches
All teams must have the following credentials and must produce them if required by the
hosting league:
1. Team Goldenrod with League and District Registrars signatures - (if requested by
hosting league)

Round 1
Team A 5 Players (1 -5) versus Team B Keeper
Team B 5 Players (1 – 5) versus Team C Keeper
Team C 5 Players (1 – 5) versus Team A Keeper
Round 2
Team A 5 Players (6 – 10) versus Team C Keeper
Team B 5 Players (6 – 10) versus Team A Keeper
Team C 5 Players (6 – 10) versus Team B Keeper

Wrap Up from Coach Gene Canes vs. Xtreme
MCFC Hurricanes v. Extreme
11/04/06
2:00 pm
York School
1 2 - F
Extreme 0 0 - 0
Hurricane 0 1 - 1
Keepers:
Hurricanes: Kiera Paulo (0 saves; 0 goals)
Hurricanes: Emilie Costa (1 save; 0 goals)
Extreme: (2 saves; 1 goal)
Notes: Despite not having their fearless leader today (Coach Corner), the young lady Hurricanes played an inspired game. We were relentless in the attack, quick on defense, and while the victory was in doubt to the end, our girls outplayed the Extreme throughout the game. A number of things impressed me (which I discuss below), including the fact that once we finally scored (only 4 minutes left in the game), the girls never let the opponents have even a chance to score. We continued to pressure, keeping the ball in our offensive end and nearly scoring again.
Coach Corner worked with Alicia and Kelly during the week, asking Kelly to pass to Alicia and then run, looking for a return pass. Well, Alicia responded with 3(that I counted) quality passes back to Kelly, and Kelly finished with 3 shots on goal, with one going in.
I told the girls that I would be keeping track of quality passes, total shots (even if not on goal), and "nice moves" that ended up beating a defender. Alex registered several times in all three categories, Blair made a nice move to beat a defender, Rebecca made a very nice cross in front of goal after taking the ball wide to the corner, Sara had a nice shot that was wide of goal, and Alicia made a very athletic play in the first half when she volleyed a ball toward the goal that was just wide.
I also give Kiera credit for some good moves in bringing the ball forward on several occasions and keeping us on the attack. Also, I can't forget Emilie who made a terrific save in goal to keep the game scoreless in the middle of the second half.
Two things to continue to work on: advancing the ball on the wings and not trying to force it down the middle of the field where all the other team's players are, and winning "50-50" balls (parents, if you aren't sure what that means, ask your daughter to fill you in).
Anyway, I had a lot of fun. See you at practice.

Odds & Ends from Coach Scott
Dear Parents:
A couple of links that will provide some information regarding District Cup on Nov. 18th & 19th:
http://www.cysadistrict2.org/district_cup.html
http://www.cysadistrict2.org/dcup06/U11GC3White.htm
The first link is the basic District Cup page with tournament info, etc. Check out the rules. They are interesting as there are bonus points for number of goals scored and shut-outs.
The second is our draw and schedule. We are in group A of the white division for class 3 and the times have been revised as of November 2. Regardless of outcome, it appears that we will play two games on Saturday and at least one on Sunday.
*********************************************
I'm taking a survey!
Who can make the following practices at the given times:
1) Thursday, 11/9 at 4:30 pm. (With the time change this is a better day than Wednesday, because Thursday is the pregame practice for football and they will end early freeing up the fields). Yes
2) Friday, 11/10/06 at 11:00-12:15/12:30. (Many players don't have school on Friday; Palma has day football games and I'm driving, so this would be our regular Friday practice scheduled during the JV football game before I drive the varsity.) - Yes
3) Wednesday, 11/15, 4:00-5:15. (JV & Fr football will be done, so fields are not an issue.) -Yes
***Friday, 11/17: I will know after this coming Sunday. CCS playoffs start for football and I don't know when or where varsity football will play their first game. Yes
Please respond to this email asap and let me know specifically about Practices 1, 2, & 3 above. Thanks.

Congratulations on a great game yesterday. I missed a great one, BUT I got a great feel for the game from the pictures. If you get a chance, check out Adela and Celeste's pictures at Snapfish.
It looks (barring the unknown!) that if this Saturday we tie or beat the PACHotshots (the team we tied in the last two minutes a couple of weeks ago), that we will wrap up 2nd place. We can't catch the Sparks this time, but I'm sure we'll have many chances during the coming years.
Thanks, and please respond to the "survey" at your earliest convenience.

October 21 Notes from the Coach
AR-ORO 95 v. MCFC Hurricanes
Saturday, 10/21/06; 1:00 pm
Constitution Field
1 2 - F
AR-ORO 0 0 - 0
Hurricanes 0 2 - 2
Scoring:
1. Hurricanes: Kiera Paulo (asst. Alex Lathos; 36th min) 2. Hurricanes: Alicia Cuevas (asst. Ashlin Gomez; 51st min)
Keepers:
AR-ORO: (9 saves; 2 goals)
Hurricanes:
Emily Costa (0 saves; 0 goals)
Rebecca Corner (0 saves; 0 goals)
Kiera Paulo (0 saves; 0 goals)
Record: The Hurricanes, 3-1-2, travel to Sunnyvale next Saturday to equalize their only loss of the season, against the Sparks.
Notes: One of the very nice things to watch today was the defenders "switching" the field and playing the ball to the opposite side of the field that their opponent had attacked from, most often from left to right. The wing players did a very nice job of moving the ball down the field and getting off the crosses.
Alex's willingness to make some long runs and be involved in the attack was huge for the attack. The extra player really unsettles the defense.
